World Peace Forum 2006 organizing continues on trackÝ
Vancouver, February 8, 2006 Organizing for the World Peace Forum continues on track for its opening date of June 23rd, organizers say. Some radio stations and print media have erroneously announced that the forum is cancelled. The Peace Forum is a go, said Executive Directory Jef Keighley. We have a full schedule of events planned for June, and delegates are coming to Vancouver from all over the world to participate.
Now more than ever, we need peace loving citizens to work with us to ensure that the world is aware Vancouver continues to be a city of peace, said Jef Keighley.
During the week of June 23-28, the Peace Boat will arrive in Vancouver from Kobe Japan. The September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows will offer a session on Civilian Casualties to War. Speakers will include Canadian Senator Doug Roche, author of The Human Right to Peace, and Dr. Helen Caldicott, founder of Physicians for Social Responsibility.
Organizers are planning two music concerts one sponsored by the Canadian Landmines Project at Plaza of Nations, and another sponsored by the Secure World Foundation. There will be a city Peace Walk on Saturday, June 24, followed by a Peace Festival at Sunset Beach with musicians and speakers. A Choral Festival is planned at the Chan Centre for Performing Arts, including work by Pablo Casals and the celebrated Requium for Peace by Larry Nickel.
There will be graphic art exhibits including the Hiroshima Exhibit of photographs and artifacts from the bombing of Japan and an art installation for peace by Yoko Ono.
Authors attending the Peace Forum include, Michael Parenti, The Culture Struggle (Seven Story Press); Mary-Wynne Ashford, Enough Blood Shed (New Society Publishers); and Paul Roberts: A War Against Truth (Raincoast Books), a Canadian bestseller about his four years in Iraq. Renowned author and educator Noam Chomsky will address the Forum via live satellite link.
The Peace Forum is a go! says Keighley. Our staff and volunteers are working hard and diligently every day. In the last week weve had two donations of $10,000. Private citizens are phoning us to volunteer. Professionals from around the world are calling with offers of help. The World Peace Forum is a citizens initiative. We welcome support from all levels of government. We know that the people of the world want peace, and the people of the world are the ones who will bring peace.
The World Peace Forum is now taking registrations at its website: www.worldpeaceforum.ca.
